이슬람 테러 조직 IS의 추종자가 국내에서 테러를 계획한 정황이 드러나 추방됐던 사실이 뒤늦게 확인됐습니다.

위험을 무릅쓰고 수사 당국에 제보하고 검거에 결정적인 역할을 한 사람은 한 여성 이주 노동자였는데요.

정작 그는 지금 강제로 추방될 처지에 놓였습니다.

조의명 기자가 단독 취재했습니다.

IS의 테러 위협으로 국내에도 긴장감이 높아지던 지난 2018년, 광주의 한 공장에서 31살의 인도네시아 출신 남성 노동자가 경찰에 검거됐습니다.

IS 추종자로 밝혀진 이 남성에게서는 테러에 쓸 수 있는 폭탄, 총기 제조 방법이 담긴 자료와 탄피가 발견됐고 경찰은 즉각추방 조치했습니다.

노트북에 그런 내용만 따로 저장해 입국해서 언젠가는 사고 한번 치겠다, 이런 사람이었죠.

이 남성을 검거하는 데 결정적인 역할을 한 사람은 같은 인도네시아 출신 노동자인 푸트리 씨.

이 남성이 IS와 접촉하고 있다는 소문을 들은 푸트리 씨는 자신의 신변이 드러나는 걸 무릅쓰고 경찰과 국정원에 제보했습니다.

이슬람에 대한 인식 나빠져요.

한 사람 때문에요.

그렇기 때문에 가만히 있을 수 없어요.

국정원 요원으로부터 증거 수집 요청을 받은 푸트리 씨는 임신 중에도 다섯 달을 추적해 남성의 숙소에서 실탄과 공포탄을 찾아냈고 사제 폭탄 제조법이 든 USB도 빼 왔습니다.

덕분에 테러를 막은 경찰은 푸트리 씨가 국가 안보 침해 사범 검거에 기여했다며 출입국 사무소에 국내 체류를 긍정적으로 검토해 달라고 공문을 보냈습니다.

인도네시아로 돌아가면 신변에 위해가 갈 우려가 있다는 거였습니다.

임시 비자를 발급받은 푸트리 씨는 불법 체류 신분을 벗고 국내에 자리잡았습니다.

그런데 돌연 출입국 관리사무소가 매년 연장되던 푸트리 씨의 비자를 거절했습니다.

푸트리 씨가 실제로 보복 위협을 받고 있다는 증거가 없다는 거였습니다.

계속 마음이 무서워요.

한국에서 태어나 인도네시아 말도 잘 모르는 9살 딸과 5살 아들은 졸지에 엄마를 따라 인도네시아로 가야 할 처지에 놓였습니다.

엄마는 못 만들어요.

불법 체류라 해도 6년 넘게 한국에서 자란 아이가 있는 가족은 아이의 고등학교 졸업까지 추방되지 않도록 지난해 정책이 바뀐 상황.

하지만 출입국 당국은 푸트리 씨가 이미 임시 비자를 받아 여기에 해당이 안 된다는 입장입니다.

푸트리 씨로서는 테러를 신고했다가 오히려 불법 체류보다 못 한 처지가 된 겁니다.

불법체류자 구제도 안 되고 특수기여자나 우리나라를 위해 애썼다.

이런 인정도 없으니까, 오히려 가만히 있는게 더 나았던 거죠.

이제 남은 체류 기간은 불과 열흘가량.

푸트리 씨가 비자를 연장해달라며 낸 행정 소송 결과는 내일 나옵니다.

The person who played a crucial role in arresting this man was Putri, a fellow Indonesian worker. Upon hearing rumors that the man was in contact with IS, Putri risked her safety to report to the police and the National Intelligence Service. She said, The perception of Islam is getting worse. It's because of one person. That's why I couldn't just stand by. I had to act quickly. Putri, who was asked to collect evidence by an agent from the National Intelligence Service, tracked the man for five months while pregnant and found live ammunition and grenades in his accommodation, and also took a USB containing homemade bomb-making methods. The police, who prevented the terrorist attack thanks to her, sent an official letter to the Immigration Office asking them to positively review her stay in Korea, as there was concern for her safety if she returned to Indonesia. Putri, who was issued a temporary visa, settled in Korea, shedding her illegal resident status. However, the Immigration Office suddenly denied the extension of Putri's visa, which had been extended annually. They claimed there was no evidence that Putri was actually under threat of retaliation. She said, I'm always scared. Because of me, that person was caught and later, knife, gun. If I go to my country. Her 9-year-old daughter and 5-year-old son, who were born in Korea and barely speak Indonesian, are now forced to follow their mother to Indonesia. The daughter said, I don't want to go, mom. I can't eat Indonesian food well. I like cabbage kimchi. Mom can't make it. Even though they are illegal residents, families with children who have grown up in Korea for over 6 years are not deported until the child graduates from high school, according to a policy change last year. However, the immigration authorities claim that Putri, who has already received a temporary visa, does not fall under this category. For Putri, reporting the terrorist incident has put her in a worse situation than being an illegal resident. She said, I can't get relief as an illegal resident, and there's no recognition for my special contribution or efforts for our country. It would have been better to just stay quiet.
